Simultaneous Interpretation Equipment

There are various simultaneous interpretation systems in use in Kenya. Therefore, the choice of the appropriate system will depend on several factors such as:

  • Firstly, we look at the number of active participants as well as total participants in your meeting.
  • The number of participants requiring interpretation,
  • The nature of your meeting such as plenary presentations for informational purposes, workshops for problem-solving, discussions for decision-making, etc.,
  • Whether there are virtual participants. For this, we deploy hybrid conference equipment.
  • Lastly, we consider your budgetary provisions.

Our interpretation system uses specialized equipment to facilitate real-time translation between languages. The interpreters listen to the source language through headphones and simultaneously translate it into the target language using a microphone via a gadget called the Interpreter’s console.

The audience receives the translation via headsets or speakers, enabling them to understand the speaker in their own language while the speaker is speaking in real-time, essential for large conferences and meetings.

Components of a Simultaneous Interpretation System

In Conference technology, there are different equipment that work together to provides real-time translation of a presenter’s speech into another language. Consequently, this allows the participants to understand the message immediately.

An SI System is a critical tool for multilingual conferences and meetings where different language speakers need to communicate seamlessly and the audience needs to understand each speaker in any language.

Below is a list of the components that comprise a Simultaneous Interpretation (SI) system in a conference setting. DTIS-Kenya Technologies will deploy the best interpretation equipment for your meeting to your great satisfaction.

Equipment - Interpreter Booth

This is a soundproof, enclosed space where interpreters work during events that require simultaneous translation.

It provides a controlled environment, minimizing noise and distractions, so interpreters can listen to speakers and deliver interpretations clearly.

Equipment - Interpreter Console

This is a piece of equipment that allows interpreters to listen to multiple audio sources and deliver their interpretation into a microphone, which is then transmitted to audiences with receivers.

It's a critical tool for simultaneous interpretation, enabling multilingual communication in conferences and other events.

Microphone systems

It comprises various components designed to capture, transmit, and receive sound waves, converting them into electrical signals.

Wired push-to-talk microphones (table mics) and wireless microphones are often used.

A roving microphone, often called a "handheld mic" is a microphone that is passed around or moved from person to person to capture audio, typically during audience Q&A or discussions

Headsets

-       A headset is a device worn on the head that allows participants to listen to audio and communicate with others using a combination of earphones and a microphone

-       Typically, it consists of headphones (or earphones) and a microphone. The headphones deliver audio to the user, while the microphone allows them to speak and be heard.

-       Wired Headsets connect to a device via a cable, providing a reliable and stable connection

-       Wireless Headsets use Bluetooth, Infra-Red or FM technologies to connect to the devices, offering freedom of movement during the meeting.

-       Noise-Canceling Headsets: Use active noise cancellation technology to reduce ambient noise and improve clarity

Transmitters

A transmitter is a device that sends out signals, most commonly audio or video, to be received by others.

These signals can be transmitted wirelessly (Infrared transmitters, Bluetooth Transmitters and FM transmitters) or through cables.

In interpretation setting, transmitters are often used in conjunction with receivers to facilitate audio or video distribution, especially for simultaneous interpretation or for presenting content on screens

Receivers

- These are devices that pick and decode audio or visual signals, often wirelessly, allowing attendees to listen to or view presentations or interpretations.
- They are often used with simultaneous interpretation equipment, enabling participants to listen to the translated version of a speech in their preferred language.

Central Control Unit

a Central Control Unit (CCU) is a system processor that manages and controls various components of a conference system, including microphones, audio distribution, and voting.

It acts as the central hub, providing power and control signals to conference units, distributing audio and control

PA System

A PA (Public Address) system is an audio system that amplifies and distributes sound, ensuring everyone in the room can hear speakers and presenters clearly.

It typically includes microphones, an amplifier, and speakers, all working together to project audio effectively within the conference room.

Tour guide PA system

This is a portable audio system that enables a speaker (like a conference presenter) to communicate clearly and audibly with a larger group of participants even while moving.

Tour guide systems are particularly useful when it's difficult for the speaker to be heard by everyone due to background noise, large group sizes, or distances between the speaker and audience.

It typically consists of a transmitter for the speaker and individual receivers (often with headphones) for the listeners, ensuring everyone can hear the speaker, even in noisy environments or at a distance.

Audience Response System

This is a technology that allows presenters to engage their audience in real-time by collecting feedback, opinions, and questions from attendees using handheld devices or mobile apps.

This enables the presenter to get instant insights into audience understanding, gauge their interest, and potentially adjust the presentation accordingly.

Video Mixers

This is a portable audio system that enables a speaker (like a conference presenter) to communicate clearly and audibly with a larger group of participants even while moving.

Tour guide systems are particularly useful when it's difficult for the speaker to be heard by everyone due to background noise, large group sizes, or distances between the speaker and audience.

It typically consists of a transmitter for the speaker and individual receivers (often with headphones) for the listeners, ensuring everyone can hear the speaker, even in noisy environments or at a distance.

Equipment - Cameras

This is a portable audio system that enables a speaker (like a conference presenter) to communicate clearly and audibly with a larger group of participants even while moving.

Tour guide systems are particularly useful when it's difficult for the speaker to be heard by everyone due to background noise, large group sizes, or distances between the speaker and audience.

It typically consists of a transmitter for the speaker and individual receivers (often with headphones) for the listeners, ensuring everyone can hear the speaker, even in noisy environments or at a distance.

Factors affecting the choice of a simultaneous Interpretation System

Simulteneous Interpretation Equipment

First and foremost, we consider the size of audience that will require interpretations services.

    • Large events: Simultaneous interpretation is essential for large conferences, meetings, or public events where a large audience needs to understand the speech in multiple languages.
    • Smaller settings: For smaller groups, whispering or liaison interpretation (a form of consecutive interpretation) might be more suitable.
    • Scalability: The system should be able to accommodate a range of audience sizes, with options for easy expansion or reduction.
    • Multilingual events: If multiple languages are involved, the interpretation system needs to support the necessary channels and transmitters.
    • Language support: Ensure the system can handle the specific language combinations required.
    • Acoustics: A well-equipped venue with good acoustics is crucial for clear audio quality, which is essential for accurate simultaneous interpretation.
    • Space requirements: Consider the available space for interpreters’ booths, equipment, and audience placement.
    • Connectivity: For online or hybrid events, ensure reliable internet connectivity to support the use of RSI (remote simultaneous interpretation) platforms.
    • Equipment costs: The initial investment in hardware (transmitters, receivers, booths) and software can vary depending on the system’s features and capacity.
    • Maintenance and support: Ongoing costs for maintenance, repairs, and technical support should be factored in.
    • Audio quality: Clear, crisp audio is essential for accurate interpretation.
    • System reliability: Choose a system with a proven track record of reliability and minimal technical issues.
    • Support and training: Ensure adequate support and training for users and interpreters.
    • Lectures and panel discussions: Simultaneous interpretation is well-suited for events where attendees primarily listen and do not engage in frequent speaking.
    • Meetings and negotiations: Simultaneous interpretation can facilitate more efficient communication in international meetings and negotiations.
